Route stages in Cork

Mizen Head Peninsula

Skibbereen → Schull → Barley Cove → Mizen Head. 80 km from Skibbereen. Narrow but passable for most vans. Barley Cove is the overnight; Mizen the day stop. Allow two days.

Beara Peninsula

Glengarriff → Castletownbere → Healy Pass → Kerry. The Beara is 140 km. Cross via the Healy Pass for the most dramatic approach in the southwest. The Beara has fewer crowds per km than anywhere on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Sheep's Head Way

Bantry → Kilcrohane → Sheep's Head tip. 60 km out and back. The quietest drive in West Cork. The walking path along the ridge is excellent and almost nobody does it.

Services — gas, water, waste

🔥 Gas

Cork city's SuperValus and Tescos are the main hub for Campingaz and Kosangas. Bantry, Skibbereen and Clonakilty also have good options. Stock up in Bantry before heading to the Mizen or Beara peninsulas — smaller villages are hit-and-miss.

💧 Water

Cork city leisure centres (Leisureworld Bishopstown, Riverstown) do day passes. Bantry pier has a tap used by visiting boats. On the peninsulas, ask at garages — most will fill a tank for nothing.

🗑 Waste disposal

Bantry bring centre is the most accessible for the peninsulas. Skibbereen tip also reachable. Chemical toilet disposal: Barley Cove Beach Hotel allows dump point use for a small fee; also try Schull pier.

📡 Connectivity

Three and Vodafone are strong in Cork city and main towns. Mizen tip and the back roads of Beara have genuine dead zones. Download offline maps before heading west of Bantry.

Seasonal reality

Jan–Mar

Mild by Irish standards. Mizen and Beara accessible year round. Quiet, green, rewarding. West Cork hospitality is warm in winter.

Apr–May

Best window. Roads empty, everything open, wildflowers on the Sheep's Head. Schull has its best weekly market season.

Jun–Aug

Schull and Bantry get very busy. Barley Cove and Sheep's Head stay quiet — push to the ends of the peninsulas to find space.

Sep–Oct

Excellent. Fastnet Race week is August but the boats are gone by September. The peninsulas in autumn light are unbeatable.
